SSRTA ATV Safety


Bestline Powersports, Snow Shoe Rails to Trails worked together with DCNR at Bestlines Open House on April 26, 2008 to provide DCNR certification training for youths 8 through 15 years of age. SSRTA members that are DCNR certification trainers Terry & Eileen Long, Eric Brooks, Justin Long, Dave Walker & George Holt coordinated their efforts with Ed Kitchen, DCNR Forest Ranger in providing the training to 15 participants. Tread Lightly was incorporated into this years training.

Bill & Nancy Stugart are members of the SSRTA and are also DCNR certified trainers. They will be providing certification training in the Williamsport areas at the following times and dates.

All-Terrain Vehicle Safety Classes will be held on April 26, May 17, and May 31, 2008 at Wheels Of Williamsport, Inc., 99 Grey Fox Drive,
Montoursville, PA. The class starts at 8:30 AM.

Class size is limited and registration is required prior to the day of the class. The class will be taught by certified safety instructors Bill
and Nancy Stugart. Bill and Nancy have been certified by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Conservation and Natural
Resources, Bureau of Forestry to teach safety classes.

The student must provide their own ATV.

The ATV law requires that youths ages 8 through 15 take a safety training course prescribed by the Department of Conservation and Natural
Resources and have a safety training certificate issued by the Department before operating an ATV off their parents or legal guardians
property.

Youths and adults may register to take the course.

SAFETY

                                                    

Headlights can be seen from a great distance.  ATVs, snowmobiles, and bicycles,
please turn on headlights when using the trail.

                         What They Mean...
                                           How To Signal...

   STOP
- Arm raised from the shoulder and extended straight up over the head with palm of hand flat.



LEFT TURN
- Left arm extended straight out from shoulder and pointing in the direction of the turn.



RIGHT TURN
- Left arm raised at shoulder height, elbow bent and forearm vertical with palm of hand flat.



SLOWING
- Left arm extended out and down from side of the body with a downward flapping motion of hand to signal warning or caution.



ONCOMING
- Left arm raised at shoulder height, elbow bent and forearm vertical, wrist bent, move arm from the left to right over head, pointing to the right side of the trail.



ATVs FOLLOWING
- Arm raised, elbow bent, with thumb pointing backward, in hitch hiking motion move arm forward to backward over your shoulder. NOTE: If you are traveling in a small group, hold up the number of ATVs behind you.



LAST ATV IN LINE
- Raise forearm from handle bar and show clenched fist at shoulder height.


Remember: If You Abuse it, you'll lose it! Careless operation of ATVs/Snowmobiles can cause damage and may result in closing the trail to riders. Respect the environment and other trail users by using common sense and common courtesy, what is available today will be here to enjoy tomorrow.

 

Please obey all signs along the trail. They are for your safety as well as the safety of fellow trail users.
